Brand History


  • 1973 The Mars family ask 2 nutritional scientists, one in the UK and one in Germany,  to develop a natural and superior fish food, and then prove it. Dr David Ford beat the competition from Germany, and production began in Leeds, England.
  • 1975 Aquarian® brand launched into independent aquatic trade in July: 8 varieties of flaked fish food across 14 SKUs, and 7 treatments. Rapidly became No 1 Fish Food in the UK.
    • Launched into Grocery trade in September 1975.
    • Aquarian® Advisory Service launched simultaneously to provide expert advice to fishkeepers and support expert groups and societies.
    • 1978 Aquarian® launched in USA and Europe along with branches of AAS.
  • 1985 Atlantis® equipment range launched to complement food & treatments
  • 1987 Relaunch of Aquarian® remedies with a numbered system, 1-10.
  • 1988 Launch of reduced range of equipment under Aquarian® brand
  • 1995 Decision to discontinue equipment and focus on expertise in nutrition
  • 1996 Relaunch of Aquarian® foods with new packaging and varieties
  • 2000 "Care for Life" logo launched
  • 2003 Aquarian® joins new Mars Global Fishcare group portfolio
  • 2008 Aquarian® relaunches all flake products to reflect the expertise included in the fish food recipes
